This year, your parents decided to make your home into a haunted house for all of the neighbors to come and enjoy. On the night of Halloween, you gather all of your friends and head to your house. When you knock on the door expecting your parents to start the haunted house, something spooky happens instead...3 ghosts come to the locked door! He says to you, “Hello human friends, my name is Dr. Can D. Corn. My scientist partners (Dr. Pump Kin and Dr. Trick R. Treaters) are helping me with a little Halloween experiment this year. You must wind your way through the witches and goblins to find your parents or else they will turn into pumpkins! You better hurry!”

1. StoryRead the story to the class. There is a clue for students to find to relate to the 3 digit lock clue. In the story, the 3 and lock are in bold hinting for students to find information for the 3 digit lock in the story. Also in the story, the names of the doctors are italicized. Students will have to use this information to connect to the 3 digit lock picture in order to first solve the clue for the small Breakout EDU box. Can D Corn (candy corn)Pump Kin (pumpkin)Trick R. Treater (trick or treaters)

2. Small Lock BoxOutside: 3 digit lockInside: “Supplies Needed” sticky note, blacklight, cut up pieces of the Halloween riddle

3. Large Lock BoxOutside: hasp with directional lock, text lock, key lock, and 4 digit lockInside: Congratulations printable3 Digit LockHang the picture of trick-or-treaters out on Halloween night somewhere in the room for students to see. It should be visible to students as this relates to the story to help students solve the 3 digit lock clue. Since this image requires a lot of colored ink to print, you can also pull it up on a computer screen for students to see it instead. Another alternative would be to display this image for the students and give each group a copy of the story.

4. Directional MultilockCut out the sticky note titled “Supplies Needed” from the printables. Put this inside the small Breakout EDU box.

5. 4 Digit LockUsing the invisible ink pen, circle the words “spiders, ” “cats, ” “bats, ” and “witches." This will be an extra hint for students to solve the clue.

6. Key LockCut apart each word in the question “What room do ghosts avoid? ”On the back of one of the pieces, write “Tell the teacher” using the invisible ink pen. Put all the pieces of the question in the small Breakout EDU box.

7. CluesFor all of the clues, use a variety of ways for students to find them. Some suggestions would be to display the clues in visible places around the room, hide clues around the room (i. e. under a table, under a chair, etc.), or a combination of both.
